Remote Geotechnical Monitoring:

We are proud to have played a part in assisting AAJV (AECOM AureconJV) deliver a successful geotechnical investigation scope for the Great Western Highway Upgrade Project in NSW.

Our unique remote monitoring technology was installed across a wide distributed network of boreholes, some in very remote areas, to provide near real-time geotechnical (pore pressure) and groundwater level monitoring data to engineers working on the project. With the initial scope now completed, the ongoing real-time data being delivered from the devices will be handed over to Transport for NSW for ongoing remote monitoring.

The proposed tunnel near the Blue Mountains Region of NSW was tipped to be Australia's longest road tunnel at 11kms long and to form the main road corridor between Central Western NSW and the Sydney region. The delivery of the $2.5Billion project has been subject to wavering political support over the past two years, however critical geotechnical investigation works continued during this time and findings are now in the hands of the states transport authority TfNSW.

The geotechnical investigation was undertaken and completed by AAJV, a Joint Venture of two global engineering powerhouses Aecom and Aurecon who engaged EWS to supply and install our unique satellite telemetry EWS Switch VWT and EWS Well Cap dataloggers to monitor pore pressure and groundwater levels across the and gather critical baseline data before any construction works begin.

Our unique technology allowed for reliable data transmission from the entire project alignment including the sites most remote areas. The distributed network of EWS telemetry devices transmit to Orion dashboard where near real-time data was easily viewed and analysed.

"Setting up an automated groundwater monitoring network in such a remote environment is not easy. The overall reliability of data collection, transmission, storage and online presentation in very good and will greatly simplify groundwater monitoring for years to come" - AAJV Principal Hydrogeologist
